Blacksmith - Get Back To Love [FFrr]
Heading back to the tail end of the 80s and a track that exemplified great soulful house music, albeit this would have been described as Garage back then (before the rise of the UK garage scene). Blacksmith were the UK based trio of
Hugh Atkins, Karl Atkins & Pete Trotman whose remixes proved more prolific than their own releases; the words "Brixton Bass Mix" were a positive indicator of quality back in the early 90s in particular. "Get Back To Love" was and still is an uplifting track with both soul and energy in abundance; with Josh Milan, Chris Herbert and Kevin Hedge aka Blaze on the remix this version has their New Jersey stamp all over it too.

Flashback 1990
Diana Brown & Barrie K Sharpe - The Masterplan [FFrr]
If I'm being honest with myself, I've neglected this particular track for way too long. Back when it came out in 1990 it was a firm favourite, and a track that graced my sets most weekends for several years. In addition to the outstanding original release, there was a second 12" with David Morales remixes before a re-release on Acid Jazz in '92 which included excellent remixes from Dave Lee. In this instance it's the "American 12" Mix" that's feaured with David Morales at the helm. It isn't all that much of a departure from the original mix but the bass is a little deeper, the keys a little firmer and the vibe a touch moodier. Diana's vocals are awesome and it's a track that sounds every bit as amazing 31 years later as it did the first time I played it all those years ago.

Flashback 1990
Satoshi Tomiie ft Arnold Jarvis - And I Loved You [ffrr]
Heading back more than thirty years to the summer of 1990 and I track that I fell in love with almost instantly. It has remained a firm favourite throughout the years with its lush arrangement and exquisitely smooth vocals. The star studded credits featuring the names of Frankie Knuckles, David Morales & Eric Kupper alogside those of Satoshi & Arnold did tend to raise expectations; they were fully met and then some. Every inch a classic!

D Mob ft Cathy Dennis - C'mon & Get My Love [FFrr]
Back in the late 80s, Danny Poku (or has he was better known Danny D), experienced both commercial underground success as D Mob. Danny was one of the earliest of the British producers to put his own stamp onto the House sounds that were emerging from the USA. This particular track featured the sultry vocals of Cathy Dennis and the vocal mix enjoyed significant airplay. It was however the "Keys II My Love Mix" that captured the imagination of the clubbing fraternity. It contains what has to be one of the most impressive keyboard solos found in a house track even now. Former Squeeze pianist Jools Holland delivers a virtuoso performance and the driving funky bassline create an irresistible force urging you to the floor. It's not a track I listen to that often but nearly three decades later it still makes me smile every time.
